Sam strives For 55 - Week Five

Picture
Here is week 5 of Sam's reading journey, the metrics and first week can be found here
Star Wars: Triple Zero by Karen Traviss
  1. Intrigue
    1. If you’re not a Star Wars fan, I don’t see much of a reason for you to read this. It’s from the original canonical books, which are now non-canonical (RIP expanded universe). It follows a group of Clone Troopers during the Clone Wars, along with a jedi padawan who is the only female character of note. So it’s fun for me, but not for everyone.
  2. Writing Style
    1. For Star Wars novels Karen Traviss joins the ranks of Timothy Zahn and Daniel Jose Older as some of my favorite writers. There’s the normal tropes of Sci-Fi and Star Wars novels where adjectives are almost the exclusive use of word in the book, but Traviss has an excellent way of getting you to care about characters.
    2. Juicy Quote-
“Scorch: "I think Sev might have an anger problem."
Sev: "I think you have an intelligence problem.”
  3. Flow of Storytelling
    1. Traviss does an excellent job of moving the story forward, and not wasting any time. This can cause moments where important info is buried and not given time to breath, but in general Traviss is in command of the story. However, the entire story is thrown off when (spoiler) the only female character of importance, is willed by the force to become a mother. In today’s understanding that motherhood is not the only important thing a woman can do, it’s a sure letdown to have the one female character’s mission to be pregnant and it’s not even her choice!
  4. Re-readability:
    1. No, in short. I have very little desire to re-read this book.
  5. TESS
    1. Does not qualify.

Final Rating: ★★
