Al Russell

Basilisk
For JR

The desert lizard has risen
running like a scalded dog
amazing flexibility and power in the legs
barreling toward the end of the road
that leads off the edge of the world.

The paw, the talon, the heel of the hand
of the man, of the bear, of the desert lizard
connects with the skull of the root of the night
of the word that found its mark in your throat.

Horsemen launch into the canyon where the water smells
like sediment, algae, and the color clear.

Picture
Al Russell is a pansexual nonbinary tankie North Carolinian former educator parent dog lover who reads too many books, watches too many movies, and smokes too many cigs. Previous collections (available from Vegetarian Alcoholic Press) are titled Children of the Anxious City and Lookinglasshouse.

Photography from Me & My Shadows
Picture

Picture
My sculptures and photography incorporate surrealistic, mythological and magical imagery often with whimsical overtones — aimed at provoking our experiences and self reflections. Aiming to unbalance our rational minds, the predominant imagery deals mostly with facial expressions of both living and “non-living” beings, and things that speak to us in their own languages. They are mixed media assemblages that have been assembled, disassembled and reassembled, becoming abstractions unto themselves. I am an Industrial design graduate of Pratt Institute in New York. I have been a designer and design director for the past twenty years including for numerous company, corporate and government projects. They included a children's museum, for the city of New York and the Board of Education, involved in all aspects of marketing and design.

Ellie Snyder

Magic City

Twilight plummets through glass
Onto Yve’s stacked cavern beds
Nicked people spinning off the curb
While a girl with bandaged feet hauls
Her kill home over her shoulder

The next day the workers are louder
Stuffing sacks with anniversaries
They shuffle out into skin temp rain
To bars where men sever eyebrows
Sit blinds open one gold lamp on

This searing beach exists for women
And the alcove behind it full of sanded
Bottles and crisp bread stood in tins
To question eyes and their vacancy
Set back in stranger’s faces

Picture
Ellie Snyder is working her way up to the highest high heels imaginable. She is always reading a novel and can actually dance.

Mary McColley

UNTITLED 2

I am wingless beneath a sky train in the gutted,
electric crack of night,
puckered lamps hang closer than the clouds,
not that there are stars out, anyways,
and a cold wind runs through a hot country,
slides its brillig arm ‘round my shoulders, asks me,
are you more than or less than the light?

Picture
MARY McCOLLEY is a writer and poet originally from Maine. She has wandered and worked for a number of years in France, Thailand, and Palestine. Her pastimes include killing lobsters and selling street art.
